Brocksdown was established in 2011, specialising in small-scale leaded and stained glass work in West Berkshire and the surrounding counties. We have now relocated to North Yorkshire, serving the North York Moors and East Cleveland areas.
Having lived in old properties for the last 38 years, I have not only acquired many practical skills but also become aware of how difficult it can be to find specialist tradesmen at a reasonable cost. Our previous property was a 400-year-old thatched cottage with leaded lights in original wrought iron frames and these were in need of restoration.
The opportunity arose in 2010 to break from a 33 year career in air traffic control engineering, so I decided to train in the techniques of leaded glass repair and conservation - initially to restore the windows in my own cottage. There are not many tradesmen in this field, and many are geared more to large commissions, ecclesiastical and architectural work.
There was clearly room for a local business to provide restoration and repair services to smaller domestic properties and so Brocksdown was set up to fill the gap. In addition to repair, restoration and conservation, I have also undertaken commissions for domestic stained glass, usually to restore a period appearance where original glass has been lost over the years.
I can undertake work on domestic leaded light windows (including stained glass), ranging from replacement of broken panes and damaged lead, refixing of loose panes and panels, right up to full restoration or new build.
Old and brittle lead can be replaced, existing old glass can sometimes be resused and broken panes replaced with matching, traditionally made glass to retain the "rippled" effect of old windows. Iron frames are derusted and painted with long lasting enamel, and the glass panel refitted to the frame using a combination of traditional fastenings and modern sealants to ensure a watertight finish.
Costs mainly depend on time and travel required to do the work, but replacing a few broken panes could be a lot less than you think, and even complete restoration of a leaded panel is likely to be less than the cost of installing a modern replacement window - and will look much better too.
